Emmanuel - God With Us
We can hardly end this programme
without a reading from the book of Psalms -
after all P.S.A.L.M. is our name!
This is part of Psalm 132, one of the Songs of Ascents,
sung by the pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem.
Some people think that this Psalm was acted -
and it just happens to mention Bethlehem ( Ephrathah)
- shades of nativity plays again!
There are certainly speaking parts for David, the Lord..
and a chorus of all the people.
Firstly, David speaks:
"I will not enter my house, or get into my bed,
I will not give sleep to my eyes, or slumber to my eyelids,
Until I find a place for the Lord,
A dwelling place for the mighty one of Jacob.
Lo, we heard of it in Ephrathah, we found it in the fields of Ja-ar."
And then the people's chorus:
"Let us go to His dwelling place, let us worship at His footstool."
David was seeking a dwelling place for the Ark of the Covenant -
which once stood in the tabernacle
in the midst of the people in the wilderness -
the sign that God was with them.
God with His people then.
God with David.
Emmanuel - God with us - now - and for evermore.........
because of the first and best Christmas present ever -
the one that never disappoints -
the gift of God's Son - the baby in the manger.
Now that is - quite simply - Christmas!!!
